A federally-mandated national “Call Before You Dig” number, “811,” was created to help protect individuals from unintentionally hitting underground pipelines while working on digging projects.
When dialing “811,” the call is forwarded to the One Call Center in your area for processing. Local One Call Center operators record the location of the dig and then notify the affected pipeline companies of your digging plans. Affected pipeline companies then dispatch a professional locating crew to mark the approximate location of their lines within a few days. Every digging job requires a call – even small projects like planting trees or shrubs.
Each state has laws that require excavators to “call before you dig.” Do not assume the location or depth of the pipeline. Markers may not show the exact location of the line.
Please contact your local One Call center at least 48 hours in advance, prior to digging. The Common Ground Alliance provides state specific information and a list of best practices.
Please advise us immediately if you make any contact, however minor, with the pipeline so we can investigate for possible damage.
Thank you for helping us keep your neighborhood safe!
