Security benefits

Achieving long-term energy security requires balanced, diversified and sustained investment in the production of both traditional energy sources and lower-carbon solutions.

Access to reliable and affordable energy is essential to our daily lives and underpins economic and social progress around the world. Both ExxonMobil and the International Energy Agency project that oil and natural gas will account for more than 50% of total primary energy in 2050. However, reducing carbon emissions is also critical.

In considering this dual challenge, ExxonMobil believes increasing supplies of affordable reliable energy and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions is not an “either/or” proposition. ExxonMobil is investing in significant projects to achieve both.

Whether intended to increase the supply of affordable, reliable energy or to reduce carbon emissions, these projects require pipelines to be successful. Pipelines safely gather and deliver crude oil from production fields to refineries and the resulting products to industrial users or distribution networks that eventually connect to consumers. Pipelines also safely transport captured Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions to underground reservoirs that are certified for the safe and permanent storage of CO2. By doing so, pipelines help deliver a secure and sustainable supply of energy.
